1) 1129081. Sgt Robert 'Bob' William SAIGER. D.F.C./ D.F.M.
(Wop A/G) 78 & 158 Squadrons.(30 W.P.M. WINDOW BASHER )

A twice decorated airman from County Durham, promoted from the ranks. Crashed & survived in HALIFAX II. DT771 (EY-D) on take off at RAF BREIGHTON 15/16 July 1943. Crash due to faulty A.S.I. which was under reading. Pilot aborted take off but aircraft had flying speed and crossed the airfield perimeter and ended up in a potato field. No casualties.

2) 1076187. Sgt -P/O Harold 'Taff' (Fuel Cock Joe) WILTSHIRE. D.F.C. & Bar ( Flight Engineer ) 78 & 158 Squadrons.
A twice decorated airman promoted from the ranks. Also survived the above Halifax crash on 15/16 July 1943.

3) Pilot Officer Neville E."Woodie Walk Back" DONMALL
578 Squadron ( Navigator) ( Evader )

An interesting man who is shown on the scarf to be the holder of a DFC but no trace of this award to him. Shot down in 578 Sqd HALIFAX II NA501 (LK-X) on 22/23 December 1944. Evaded capture for several days in severe winter snow conditions. Crossed a river and a frozen enemy minefield until being liberated upon meeting American Army troops. His full story appears in several books on RAF Evaders.

(Pictured 'right' on the wing of a 578 Squadron Halifax.) A young lad of 18 from 712 Riverview Ave, Verdun, Montreal. Entered the construction industry ( foundations specialist ) after WW2. Married in 1947 and raised six kids. Retired to Rankin Inlet & Baker Lake, Canada. Died 5th February 2001 of a sudden heart attack.
