[THE 1st DEVONSHIRE REGT]
The 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment was a Regular Army unit and on 21st August 1914 just 17 days after Britain's entry into the war, and as part of the British Expeditionary Force, the 1st Devons left Jersey, (see picture of the lads on the boat) where they had been stationed since 1911. With a landing at Le Havre on 22nd August they were reinforced by nearly 500 reservists from Exeter.

The battalion joined the 8th Brigade of the 3rd Division in early September 1914, and then transferred to the 14th Brigade of the 5th Division later in the month.

In late August and into September, during their first spell in the line, they suffered 100 casualties from shelling. In October in the Battle of La Bassee in the vicinity of the famous canal they supported the badly mauled 1st Dorsets and helped capture Givenchy Ridge. The Devons performed well during the bitter three-week battle but lost two thirds of their officers and a third of their men. It was during this late September period that Wally Clarke received fatal wounds from which he died at 13th General Hospital, Boulogne on the 27th while in the Defence of Festubert.
Walter is commemorated with eternal honour at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.

From November they occupied Messines Ridge in rain and sleet, often knee- or waist-deep in mud and icy water.

Walter was just 20 years old and is commemorated with eternal honour at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
