ARTHURS. 10th Bn ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERSKILLED-IN-ACTION 20th JULY 1916 (Age 22) during a DOUBLE VICTORIA CROSS action at Delville Wood, Somme.Sydney is remembered with eternal honour at Longueval's London Cemetery, France.[HISTORY]
Sydney John ARTHURS was born in South Kensington, London in 1894 . He also lived in Putney, London but later Enlisted at Carmarthen. He was one of 91 men killed, died of wounds or missing on 20th July. The total Royal Welsh Fusilier's casualties were 228 during this action. The 10th RWF was ordered to take position in Delville Wood on the 20th July (without any prior reconnaissance) and to push through it from Princes Street. As so many troops (of whom the remains of the South African Brigade) were involved in such a small area, the order was given that there should be no firing.
Reaching the wood at 2.45am, they were misled by the 53rd Brigade Guide (some declared that he was drunk) and directed to Buchanan Street and right smack into the German lines. Suddenly the whole wood seemed to be full of Germans. The Welsh encountered a heavy machine gun fire and many of them were surrounded. Brutal close quarter hand to hand fighting followed in which Corporal J.J Davis (D Coy) and Private O.A. Hill (C Coy) were to gain the V.C.

ARTHURS. 6th Bn DUKE OF CORNWALL's LIGHT INF'yKILLED-IN-ACTION 19th OCTOBER 1917, (Passchendaele) A Young Bugler (Age 19) Fred was lost without trace in the shocking mud of Ypres and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial wall. [HISTORY]In early October 1917, the British offensive at Ypres in Belgium once again turned towards the northeast of the town with an attack aimed at taking the village of Passchendaele situated on the high ground there, but the attack on the village on the 12th October failed. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig was nevertheless determined to capture this high ground outside Ypres before winter set in and continued to make the village of Passchendaele his main objective. Repeated attacks from the direction of Hooge, and the Gheluvelt plateau were made over the next couple of weeks and it was during one of these probing attacks towards the Passchendaele Ridge that Frank Arthurs was killed in Action on the 19th October 1917.
