PALMER. 8th Bn DEVON REGt.KILLED-in-ACTION, 1st DAY, BATTLE of LOOSE, 25th September 1915.[BIOGRAPHY]PERCY PALMER was born in Torquay in 1895 and was resident there when 8th Devon's were formed at Exeter on 19th August 1914. From Exeter the unit went to Rushmore camp, Aldershot, as part of 14th Division in November 1914. From Aldershot they went into billets just a few miles down the road to the South of Farnham, Surrey. Then back to Aldershot in March 1915 until May when they left 14th Div. The 8th DEVON REGt arrived in France at Le Havre on 26th July 1915 where they joined 29th Brigade 7th Division at Carvin on 4th August 1915. [OVER THE TOP 25th SEPTEMBER 1915]. [1st Day Battle of Loos]Percy Palmer & his mates went over the top in the famous Devon's attack on the southern edge of the HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT on 25th September 1915 on the 1st Day of The Battle of Loos. The Devon's losses were totally catastrophic with 600 men and officers killed out of the original 750 who had commenced the attack. Only 150 men answered roll call on the 26th.Percy had only been in France for eight weeks, he was just 20 years old. Percy's body was never recovered and he is commemorated with eternal honour on the Loos Memorial. Also included is the surviving brother's 1914-15 Trio. To: 356678. O.S. E. PALMER.
