BIFFIN 2/SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS.(Ross-shire Buffs,The Duke of Albany's) An Ultra Late Casualty. KILLED IN ACTION on 2nd November 1918 at the Battle of Valenciennes. Age 28. Based on his service number Sidney Biffin joined the 2nd SEAFORTHS in the summer of 1907 aged 21. He had previously served as Private 9942 as a member of the Reserve Cavalry Regiment. He entered France on 8th July 1915 and with the 2/SEAFORTHS and took part in some of the most famous & critical battles of the Great War. He had been in France just a few days under a year when he and his comrades took part in the Battle of Albert and in the major attack of the 1st Day of The Somme on 1st July 1916. He and his unit saw the successful capture of Montauban, Mametz, Fricourt, Contalmaison and La Boiselle. Indeed, he had a miracle survival through all these actions and the future battles of 1st / 3rd Scarpe - Polygon Wood - Broodenseinde - Poelcappelle - 1st PASSCHENDAELE - 1st Arras- Hazebruck- Bethune and Flanders. After all his bravery, sheer grit and good fortune, Sidney BIFFIN tragically fell in the very final few days of the war on 2nd November 1918 at the Battle of Valenciennes just 9 days before the Armistice of 11th November. He is remembered with eternal honour at Preseau Cemetery which is just five miles from Velenciennes. The 2nd November clearly marked a brutal day for the 2nd SEAFORTHS as a brief viewing of the records shows that there are at least 25 of Sidney's comrades buried with him here, all of whom were killed on the same day. The medals are truly superb being in about Gem Mint State with original ribbons and hence represent unbeatable quality. Sidney was the son of John William Biffin of "Avondale" St Margaret's Terrace, Whitnash, Leamington Spa, Warickshire. He was 28. FIT FOR THE FINEST COLLECTION. (SOLD)
