[BIOGRAPHY] 1877-
John Stephen BANNON was born in Bootle, Liverpool in 1877. He first joined the Army at Liverpool on 15th July August 1896 at age 18. He had previously worked as a Labourer and had been a member of 3rd North Lancashire Regt prior to his enlistment in 6th Dragoons in 1896. He was a lad of 119lbs & 5ft 7”. He was of Roman Catholic persuasion.

He probably served for 12 years (Assumed discharge in 1908) with service in South Africa while taking part in The Relief of Kimberley , and the actions at Belfast, Diamond Hill, Driefontein, Johannesburg & Paardeberg.

John’s Mother lived at the family home at 4 Holywell Street, Bootle, Liverpool.

Shortly after the declaration of the Great War, John, at a stated age of 34 (based on his original declaration, he was probably 37) volunteered for further service at Seaforth, Liverpool on 1st September 1914. However, as he was guilty of constantly shocking and bad behaviour, he was discharged on 19th October 1914 after only 49 days in home service. All papers describe the situation.
