Henry William James Alexander was born on 14th November 1879 at Camberwell, London. He joined the Royal Navy aged just 16 as a Bugler on
 4th October 1895.
He served aboard HMS Fearless initially as an Ordinary Seaman and later as an A.B. during the Boer War until NOvember 1900, with continued service in the Royal Naval Fleet Reserve from 30 October 1903 at which date he purchased his release from the RN for a sum of £12.00. On 30th October 1908 he re-enrolled into the RFR for a further 5 years. Three days before the declaration of WW1 he was immediately recalled for duty on 2nd August 1914 !  and served thoughout the war until his eventual demobilisation in 1919.
