All three medals practically mint and court mounted.

This is a seriously desirable & extremely rare group which contains an outstanding YANGTZE 1949 clasp “casualty” NGS in superb “must have” condition, along with a U.N. Korea medal & R.N. Long Service Good Conduct Medal.

Ordinary Seaman Brown was an officially recorded casualty aboard H.M.S. LONDON during its dash to assist HMS AMETHYST. He was wounded when the London was badly shelled by the Chinese Communist Forces in the RIVER YANGTZE on 21st April 1949.

Brown is listed on the included National Archive casualty list ADM 1/ 23457 a copy of which is included with this group. Also included are a good number of very rarely seen official Admiralty documents which report and record all the situations surrounding this famous post-war action.

These included several reports from the captain of HMS London to the higher authorities.

When HMS LONDON went to the assistance of the Amethyst, she received a very extensive battering from the communist Chinese artillery. In this vicious action she sustained 17 crew dead or died of wounds and 37 men wounded, which was actually a higher wounded figure than HMS AMETHYST which had 32 men wounded & 23 killed or died of wounds.

If you are a collector of this fascinating series, you will already be well aware just how rare this group is. I’ve been in business since 1977 and in that time (46 years) of seriously keen buying I’ve only ever handled 6 similar medals, and only two of those were in groups ...the other four were singles with no confirmation of the ship of service.

As you’ll also probably know, it’s normally well nigh impossible to establish a man’s ship of service as the crew rolls mysteriously vanished some years ago while in transit between government departments.

Therefore it’s excessively rare to hold a full group to a confirmed casualty serving in HMS LONDON which was the vessel that went to the rescue of critically attacked & damaged HMS AMETHYST in this famous action.
