A VERY RARE & UNUSUAL "SOUTH AFRICAN" CAVALRY
1914-1915 Star Trio, with Bi-Lingual Victory Medal.

[BIOGRAPHY]
Private Campbell Lister Walton was born in Cape Town in 1871, but lived in Durban.
He had been a Trooper in the Natal Carbineers for 5 years before joining up with Enslin's Horse at the age of 43 for the 1914 Rebellion.

He worked as a Bank Official for Standard Bank.

Typically for a local man, he was in "B" Squadron of Enslin's Horse with his Rebellion service date given as 5th October 1914 to 21st December 1914.
On the 22nd of October 1914, Maritz attacked Upington where The Imperial Light Horse and Enslin's Horse numbered only 120 combined, but held out until reinforcement came. Private Lister's German South West service was from 28th January 1915 to 26th May 1915, where under Colonel Bouwer he proceeded with Colonel Van Deventer through the mountains to Keetmanshoop.

After the GSWA campaign, Walton joined the 4th South African Horse for service in German East Africa. Here he was in the 1st Mounted Brigade, where he served as an Acting Sergeant. The 4th South African Horse were given instructions to clear Umbulu of the enemy. In October of 1916, Walton contracted Malaria and as a result returned to Cape Town on the Ingoma on the 19th December 1916. He was discharged from service at Wynberg on the 27th of February 1917.

[ENSLIN'S HORSE]
Enslin's Horse was Pretoria's 'crack' mounted unit with most of A & B squadrons being formed from young South African government employees. The other, "C" squadron was formed from overseas men, so it's easy to see that there was a lot of good humoured rivalry and banter.

This is an extremely unusual and unexpected item and we will lay good odds that you will probably never encounter another group from this unit again as the roll confirms that only 130 trios were issued. We've seen the odd star & war medal show up in general lots at auction years ago, but despite extensive research we can't find another complete trio ever having shown up.
