At the 1st Battle of Bullecourt, during the famous action at,
MONCHY-LE-PREUX
where
the10th HUSSARS & ESSEX YEOMANRY sustained many hundreds of casualties from German Machine Gun Fire on the main street.

1914-15 Star Trio & Plaque (+superb items) K.I.A.Battle of Monchy, 11.4.1917.(ARRAS) 10th HUSSARS.  At 08:30 on 11th April 1917 the Cavarly Brigade was ordered forward. Squadrons from 3rd Dragoons, Essex Yeomanry and 10th HUSSARS thundered forward at a gallop. They moved into the North of MONCHY and when moving down through the town and out on the main street toward Roeux they came under withering German Machine Gun Fire.

"The main street of Monchy was indeed a terrible sight, and the horrors are not being exaggerated when it is described as being littered with dead men and horses. In one place the horses were lying so thick that it was necessary to climb over them in order to pass along the street. The wounded horses were in a dreadful condition, and Lieut. J. Swire, of the Essex Yeomanry, was detailed to the horrible, but necessary, duty of destroying them".

Lance Corporal Wilfred Sanderson of 10th Hussars was one of 25 Other ranks of the unit who were wiped out in this infamous action.
