The Royal Mint is known to have produced both Proof, Pattern & Specimen strikes of most of the Victorian Military Medal series. These very rarely show up. Some were used in official displays and as reference and examination strikes. Some were also presented to the monarch as “Royal Approval Specimens”

These Specimen Strikes are all Extremely Rare, but just very occasionally we come across a truly “gem” example of one of these Wyon masterpieces.

Here we have an Indian Mutiny Specimen which displays each of the five available claps, which of course occur in various combinations on the issues medals, but never all on one medal
